Roxy’s Gluten-Free Dining Review – DisneyWorld 2009

August 28th, 2009 by Roxy · Travel

Welcome to the first post in the long-anticipated “Gluten-Free Dining Review” by yours truly!  We were so excited to be able to stay onsite and to eat only Disney food for the length of our 9-night stay.  I could say good-bye to carrying my food around in a bag on my back like Port Orleans Riverside DSC03461a pack mule.  I had been told that all of the table service restaurants would accommodate the gluten-free meal, as would many of the counter service restaurants.

The biggest thing that I missed about going on vacation was the ability to try new foods and new restaurants.  For the past 13 years that I’ve been a diagnosed celiac, I always had to bring my own food whenever we went on vacation, whether it was a day trip or an extended trip.  Even at home, it’s a risk to eat in a restaurant, even if they boast a gluten-free menu.  Typically, I only eat in a restaurant if I don’t have to be anywhere the next day.  A gluten reaction can occur within 6-24 hours of consuming gluten and the amount of gluten ingested dictates the severity of the reaction.

I received a lot of terrific information from the Dietary Department at Disney that included lists of counter service and food carts that carried gluten-free foods.  Each food place had a list of the types of foods that they offered.  But what did the food taste like?  Did other celiacs like the food that they were served?

I was able to locate a couple dining reviews from other celiacs who had visited DisneyWorld.  These helped me to know what types of gluten-free meals were offered at various restaurants at the World and this helped me in making my dining reservations.  Still, there weren’t enough reviews for all of the table service restaurants that we had to choose from, so I started choosing restaurants based on the type of food that they served, and what I’d like to try.  I chose restaurants that I’d never be able to choose in the outside world.  Places like Boma at the Animal Kingdom Lodge….their speciality is African food.  I also chose Mama Melrose’s at Hollywood Studios, a world-class Italian restaurant.

So, please join me as I take you through my dining adventure at DisneyWorld.  I’ve written reviews for every place that I’ve eaten, ranging from resort food courts to fine dining table service restaurants.  The food at every place was absolutely fabulous and the service was excellent.  They really took good care of us at Disney.  It made our vacation even more magical!

Red Robin – Revisited

August 21st, 2009 by Roxy · Dining Review, Travel

Red Robin Menu DSC05774Friday nights at Red Robin are always busy, and today’s visit was no exception.  After waiting for 20 minutes, we were shown to our table.  I asked for a gluten-free menu this time, in hopes that they would pay more attention to the fact that my meal would need to be prepared differently than Rick’s.

We were here a week ago and it’s a good thing that I didn’t write a review then.  The manager ended up comping both of our meals because mine was so messed up (twice!).

Red Robin serves gourmet burgers.  I always have several choices for the entre, but since I started counting calories a couple months ago, my standby favorite is the Grilled Salmon Burger, no sauces, no bun.  I always ask them to make it a lettuce wrap instead so that I can pick it up to eat it rather than eating it with a knife and fork.  I’ve been getting either steamed broccoli or mandarin oranges as a side; both are excellent low-cal choices.

While we were waiting for our table, we hard the crew singing Happy Birthday to someone.  On a busy Friday or Saturday night, we’ve heard them singing 5-6 times.  How many songs would we hear tonight, I wondered.

After 20 minutes of waiting, I went up to see if we were forgotten – they had already called our name!  How did we miss that?  No matter….they seated us right away.

Freckled Lemonade DSC05781I ordered a Freckled Lemonade and Rick ordered a Coke.  A Freckled Lemonade comes with fresh strawberries and a wedge of lemon.  Very refreshing!  It’s the fresh strawberries that make the drink.

When I placed my order from the gluten-free menu, I just stated what I wanted and how I wanted it.  I did not bring up the mistakes that were made the previous two visits.

While we waited for the food, I practiced macro photography, taking photos of the drinks and coasters/menu.  I was going to have Rick handle all the food photography until he reminded me that there will be times at Disney when I’ll be eating without him (breakfasts, mostly).  I’ll need to be able to take non-blurry photos of the food that I’m eating.  The photos turned out fairly well tonight.

The food arrived and it was perfect!  My salmon burger was exactly how I ordered it!  Hurray!  I didn’t have to call over the manager to make it right!  We took a few photos of the food (Rick had already taken a bit out of his burger) and then got down to eating.  Lettuce Wrapped Salmon Burger DSC05821

A few minutes later, the manager stopped by our table to see how everything was.  It was the same manager from last week!  He said that he was glad that my meal was prepared quickly…and that he noticed us taking photos and me writing everything down.  Well, I had to tell him why I was doing a review – that it had nothing to do with the service or quality of food at Red Robin the previous week.  He laughed and said that he wanted to hear a report when we got back from Disney as to how they handle food for people with dietary restrictions as they are always trying to improve their methods.  I promised him that we’d stop back with a report.

Went to the WI State Fair!

August 9th, 2009 by Rick · Travel

A fun time was had by all at the WI State Fair today! It hit a high of 89 degrees, but there were plenty of places with air conditioning. Fortunately, we managed to avoid the rain later in the day.

Still waiting for State Fair

August 8th, 2009 by Roxy · Travel

Rain, rain, go away, we want to go to the WI State Fair! It was raining heavily in the Metro area again this morning, so no Fair for us today. (That and the fact that I’m recovering from a bout of the stomach flu on Friday night).

The weather forecast for Sunday looks much improved for Sunday. They’re saying that the high should be 96 degrees, and if it gets to 97 degrees, we’ll set a record from 1934. Oh boy! Humidity is expected to be 100%. Oh boy!

Good practice for Disneyworld at the end of August.

Getting ready for the State Fair

August 7th, 2009 by Rick · Travel

The bad news is that it was raining today, so we didn’t go to the WI State Fair. But, we’ll try again tomorrow and hope the weather is better. Looking forward to seeing the sights, maybe some shopping, and of course, watching the pigs race!
